Yesterday hundreds of tourists were evacuated from the earthquake ravaged holiday town of Kaikoura.

Otago Daily Times reporter Chris Morris was up there and has brought back scenes of the evacuation.

Holiday-makers became evacuees in Kaikoura following this week's massive earthquake.

Queues of people waited to board the HMZ Canterbury at Kaikoura for a short trip to Port Lyttelton.

This afternoon The Government has announced a $20Bn support package for those effected by the quakes.

About 500 preschoolers have had the chance to play on the city's top sporting ground.

Families gathered at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday to celebrate Children's Day.

Thousands of residents and visitors welcomed the start of the Chinese New Year with local festivities yesterday.

Revellers gathered at the Dunedin Chinese Garden, where they were welcomed by the mayor.

Traditional dancing entertained crowds, and face-painting was popular among children.

It's the Year of the Monkey, and several suitable characters were among the crowd.

Visiting Chinese performers took to the stage, showcasing theatre, music and dance.

The evening finished up with a fireworks display, visible from much of the central city.

The New Zealand Masters Games is officially under way in Dunedin for the 13th time.

Thousands of competitors took part in opening events at the weekend, alongside a well known sporting personality.

But the Olympian won't be on the receiving end of any medals this time.

A local community group is pushing for the restoration of a defunct public bus service.

The Brighton to South Dunedin route was canned last year by the Otago Regional Council, frustrating some residents.

The Dunedin City Council is going through its next annual plan, setting budgets for the coming financial year.

Residents will be asked to have their say on the final draft before the plan's formally adopted.

City councillors are giving more support to neighbourhoods not covered by community boards.

They're allocating $90,000 towards assisting groups operating in those fringe communities.
