Legislation on SOE introduced into parliament

Legislation needed to sell four state-owned companies has been introduced into parliament by the Government.

Announcing the move yesterday, State-Owned enterprises Minister, Tony Ryall, said the controversial section, relating to the Treaty of Waitangi, was being retained after discussions with Maori.

However, only the decisions of Government ministers in relation to the newly formed companies will be subject to the Official Information Act.

The companies themselves will not be.

Mr Ryall says this is the same as partly-owned state company Air New Zealand.

Energy companies Mighty River Power, Genesis, Meridian and Solid Energy are being partially sold in the sale programme.
