Man grateful for trip back to town

A 20 year old man was left cold but thankful yesterday, after being rescued from Goat Island in the Otago harbour.

Police say the man set out from Port Chalmers to the island, after seeing what seemed a short swim on the map.

But once he got there he was too cold and tired to return.

Fortunately for the man, his progress was being tracked by a Port Chalmers resident who called police.

Senior Constable Lox Kellas organised a boat from the University of Otago facility at Portobello to pick him up.

And police say the man was very grateful for the trip back to the port.
