Members' Bill hopes to establish a Special Commission of Inquiry into data breaches

A new Members' Bill hopes to establish a Special Commission of Inquiry into a spate of disastrous data breaches across government.

The Electronic Data Safety Bill will investigate privacy breaches at the Ministry of Social Development, ACC, IRD and other government agencies over the past few years.

Labour's Communications and IT spokesperson Clare Curran says at least 15,000 people have had their privacy breached in the past year alone.

The Bill could have its first reading as early as December the 5th.
