New Zealand seeing return to decline in tourist spending
A blip in tourist spending brought on by the 2011 Rugby World Cup has faded, with new figures showing a return to a contracting market.
Figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show a 6% drop in spending by international visitors since 2011.
The ministry says data for the year to December 2012 shows spending at its lowest since 2001.
2011 was a relatively good year for international tourism because of the Rugby World Cup.
But New Zealand was now seeing a return to a decline in tourist spend that was occurring before the Cup.
