Toxic algae warning
The Otago Regional Council is warning the public to avoid two popular Otago swimming locations, after the discovery of a potentially toxic algal bloom.
A dark green algae has been found in the upper Tomahawk Lagoon, and also in Lake Waihola.
It can produce a series of toxins, which are then passed to the water and can be fatal to dogs, and can cause illness in people.
The ORC will put out warning signs at the locations where the algae has been found, and will monitor the situation.
