National MP Todd Barclay has today announced he will not stand as the candidate for Clutha-Southland in the 2017 election, and will leave Parliament at the end of this term.

“This has been a hard decision to make, but it is in the best interests of our government and the National Party,” Mr Barclay said. Police are assessing recent information in relation to their investigation of the embattled National MP.

World Vision CEO Chris Clarke touched down in Queenstown recently to address a small group on poverty in the Pacific, and the Syrian refugee crisis.

Clarke discussed the Syrian crisis affecting children, forcing them to move to Lebanon and Turkey. He also spoke of malnutrition, education and healthcare issues affecting the Pacific.

New Zealand professional golfer Ryan Fox says he's keen to have his name added to the New Zealand Open Golf tournament trophy.

Fox plays on the European Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia but from Thursday will be competing on home turf, with international caddy Steve Williams carrying his bag.

The shot putter is taking time off his normal regular sport to play in the New Zealand Open this week.

Walsh spoke about his golfing abilities and expectations with the media.

Revenue Minister Judith Collins was in Queenstown today speaking to international tax officials to highlight a proposal law that cracks down on multinational companies avoiding tax.
Collins released three documents for consultation today focused on New Zealand’s response to base erosion and profit shifting.
Two of the tools are used by off shore companies to avoid paying tax in this country.

While the announcement yesterday Dunedin would be losing 362 Cadbury chocolate making jobs to Australia was not a subject raised by the media during the formal press conference, afterwards New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English told the South Today he commiserated with the workers.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council says the Glenorchy Road has been reopened to traffic.

The road was opened just after three o’clock this afternoon but was later closed around 4.30pm due to a flare up in the fire as five helicopter crews were fighting the blaze.

Power to Glenorchy however is still out.
