The Southern District Health Board's substandard doctor training at Dunedin Hospital is drawing concern from medical groups.

The New Zealand Resident Doctors' Association says the DHB's standards are slipping, putting patients at risk.

Nineteen deficiencies have been identified by the New Zealand Medical Council in relation to the SDHB's doctor training in Dunedin.

That's also a worry for the New Zealand Medical Students' Association, which says the situation is disappointing and alarming.

The health board has until May to improve its systems and gain proper accreditation for training junior doctors.
