Hundreds of residents gathered in the Dunedin Centre last night to learn more about the arrival of Syrian refugees.

The information and planning session attracted a crowd of almost 300 people.

Mayor Dave Cull spoke, alongside representatives from Red Cross and Immigration New Zealand.

They also spent time answering questions from the public.

An Ethiopian refugee was part of the panel, sharing his experience of resettling in New Zealand.

Several residents took the opportunity to speak about their concerns during the two hour meeting.

About 45 refugees are due to arrive in Dunedin in April, and dozens more later in the year.
