A top police officer at the central Dunedin station is about to become the next University of Otago proctor.

The role's being filled by Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, who's currently working as the Dunedin area response manager for police.

He oversees daily front-line policing and is the second in charge of the local armed offenders squad.

Scott's replacing former proctor Dave Miller, who resigned after just four months in the job.

The policeman's taking up the campus role at the end of May, after 24 years in uniform.

He also currently chairs the Dunedin Emergency Services Coordinating Committee.
