Otago Volts players have been taking time out of their tournament schedule for a unique game of backyard cricket.

Some professional cricketers have been matching up against students and staff from Otago Polytechnic.

The relaxed game in Harbour Terrace was organised as a fun way for academics to bond and celebrate the end of the year.

It sprung from one of the regular sponsorship meetings between the Otago Cricket Association and the tertiary institute.

Some students put their skills to use, building a grandstand from old couches and fixing a picnic table to a tree as a corporate box.

They also created some innovative half-time refreshments.
