An estimated $17.5m swimming pool complex in Mosgiel has the support of the city council.

Councillors have voted to support in principal the development of the new aquatic facility.

They're putting $6m aside for the project, to be spent in the 2018-19 financial year.

And they're spending up to $300,000 now, on detailed planning of the complex.

The council's also giving a $50,000 interest free loan to the trust managing the project.

The trust has to come up with a further $7.5m for the pool.

Councillors expect to see detailed design and cost options by the end of October.
